Feeding recommendations

Dry cat food:

Animonda, Royal Canin, Leonardo, Applaws,
Kallisbest: https://www.kallisbest.de/Katze
prefer grain-free dry food, ideally mix several varieties
You can get dry food at Fressnapf or http://zooplus.de/
Please only feed high-quality food,
please no Whiskas, Felix or Brekkies

Wet cat food:

Animonda Carny Fleischmenue plus, Shah/wet food from Aldi, Macs, Feringa, Grau
Schmusy fish meals; please feed fish only once a week.
Be careful with tuna (mercury contamination)
please only feed high-quality food,
please no Whiskas, Felix or Brekkies
Please do not feed table scraps

Supplements:

Omnibiotic ½ tsp daily for healthy gut flora
Slippery elm bark and psyllium husks several times a week, mixed with water into the wet food
Biotin to support coat change
Salmon oil to support coat change
a little butter to support coat change
To round off a varied diet, you can (and should) also offer your cats fresh meat 1-2 times a week, such as minced beef or frozen fish that you thaw and heat.
If you like, you can also feed chicks.
Yoghurt and quark round off your kitty's menu.
I am strictly against a one-sided diet, whether it's only BARF or only dry food!!

Care

Grooming:

Combing about every 14 days is enough; during coat change (spring and autumn) comb about twice a week.
Please don't comb the tail.
As a supplement for a beautiful coat, there are biotin and taurine treats, e.g. at Fressnapf

Deworming:

Always before a vaccination, otherwise once a year
I recommend having the faeces tested for worm eggs before deworming
Recommended products: Panacur, Stronghold (for cats that are also allowed in the garden)
For giardia infection: Spartrix

Cat litter:

I recommend Majescat: https://majescats.de/products/katzenstreu

General

If your cat may be ill, please call the breeder immediately: the breeder is your first point of contact, even before the vet!
Sonja Wirsing, Tel. 08462/905584

Please be firm and consistent with your darling!!!
Birmans are very intelligent; if you as the owner aren't careful, you'll quickly become your cat's servant

Are Birmans fussy eaters?

NO, NO, NO !!!!!
Birmans in particular are considered fussy eaters in the cat community, but that is NOT TRUE!!! The only one to blame for fussy Birmans is the can opener
Cats are different from people (a person sits down in front of a full plate and eats it all). A cat is a nibbler. Covering up food is a genetically rooted behaviour that even wild cats in Africa show. Begging for food is often begging for attention. Your cat may not be hungry right now and begs anyway, then gets food, sniffs it and walks away, but that doesn't mean she doesn't like the food or doesn't want to eat it. She will eat it later!!

Preventing intestinal blockage

Since I keep reading on social media that Birmans get intestinal blockages, I have thought about how you as the can opener can prevent this.

General preventive measures

Dietary fibre

Unfortunately, many cat owners are not aware of how important a role dietary fibre plays in their cat's nutrition.
It is not true that cats don't need fibre
Dietary fibre is made up of various carbohydrates that the cat cannot digest itself, but the gut needs them for intestinal peristalsis
Swellable plant fibres in the food make sure that moisture is retained in the food mass so it doesn't become too hard. The swelling of the plant fibres also increases the Volumevolume of the food mass, which stimulates the intestinal muscles to move the contents along.
If you feed only raw (BARF), or only high-quality wet food or high-quality complementary food, your cat's gut will lack important fibre for intestinal peristalsis
because meat contains 0.0 % fibre
Fibre is also often a prebiotic, and these prebiotics serve as food for the good gut bacteria
